Terra Incognita

Terra Incognita, a solo exhibition by Olga Gabrielle, July 8th, 2023, at Galería Sextante.
In this exhibition, the artist takes us on a journey through the unknown Aruba, the “terra incognita,” in a staging that uses different artistic languages: photographs, artist books, videos, installations, and objects full of meaning.

Olga Gabrielle, born in 1985, is a native of Aruba, a Leeward island in the Caribbean Sea, part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, a monarchy ruled by King Willem-Alexander of the Royal House of Orange-Nassau. She is a multidisciplinary artist who explores the human condition, cultural heritage, and the real and imaginary spaces she inhabits. Her experience in the performing arts infuses her work with dramatic elements such as staging, color, and gesture. Gabrielle often creates immersive dialogues, both personal and with the audience, to allow for non-verbal exchanges and points of reflection.

Oruba, to be an island, to be leeward, to be rocks, to be water, to be desert, and to belong to a kingdom 7,913 kilometers away.

“Terra Incognita”
Olga Gabrielle
By Víctor Fuenmayor Ruiz

… Being Caribbean, Olga Gabrielle feels drawn to Greek tragedy.
This attraction becomes an intercultural elaboration, where she fuses Caribbean bodies and rhythms with the emotional impulse in performance.

… Olga Gabrielle seems to move best within the space of the rugged natural symbolism of her roots. Everything appears to be perceived spontaneously, yet everything is thoughtfully conceived and constructed through performative multi sensoriality and the integration of the arts, to produce sensitive echoes and inquiries in viewers, concerning the unknowns between nature and the rectangle of scenic vision. Natural and cultural symbols mix and wink at the audience.
